When you're planning a wedding, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is who will officiate your ceremony. You may have come across different types of celebrants—some civil, some religious—but what’s the difference?
As a Commonwealth-registered civil marriage celebrant, I’m here to explain what I do, how I support you, and how my role differs from that of a religious celebrant.
At the heart of it, a celebrant’s role is to legally solemnise your marriage—which means making sure your wedding meets the legal requirements to be recognised under Australian law. But that’s just the beginning.
As your civil celebrant, I will:
Here’s a quick comparison to help you understand the key distinctions:
Civil Marriage Celebrant (like me) |
Religious Marriage Celebrant |
|
Legal authority |
Registered under Australian law |
Also registered, but authorised within a faith |
Ceremony style |
Flexible, inclusive, and personalised |
Follows a religious format and traditions |
Location |
Anywhere you choose—indoor or outdoor |
Often held in a place of worship |
Language |
Your choice (I offer English, Mandarin & Cantonese) |
Typically follows traditional religious language |
Content |
You decide—cultural, spiritual, secular, etc. |
Structured around faith-based practices |
Vows |
Legal vows + optional personal vows |
Includes legal and religious vows |
Choosing a civil celebrant gives you the freedom to create a ceremony that truly reflects who you are as a couple—your story, your style, and your values. It’s ideal if you:
As a celebrant who speaks English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, I also offer bilingual ceremonies for couples from diverse backgrounds who want to honour both language and culture in their special moment.
Whether you’re planning a grand celebration or a simple legal marriage, the person who stands with you and solemnises your vows plays a big part in setting the tone. As a civil celebrant, I’m here to make sure your ceremony is legally valid, deeply personal, and beautifully you.
If you’d like to learn more about how I can help bring your ceremony to life—or are unsure whether a civil or religious celebrant is right for you—feel free to get in touch. I’d love to help you explore your options

When we catch up to do your paperwork, one of the key steps is checking your ID and legal documents. It’s a simple part of the process—but super important to make sure your marriage is valid.
我们在见面填写结婚资料时,其中一个重要步骤就是核对你们的身份证明和法律文件。这一步虽然简单,但对确保婚姻的法律有效性至关重要。
